Paul, having just soaked dry seed in water to imbibe, or in some cases sulfuric acid to scarify hard-coated seed (many species of fam. Fabaceae, Crataegus spp., Cotoneaster spp. and so on), I cannot say much about using dishwater soap to leaching; won't do any harm, though, I suppose. Another thing by Oplopanax horridus as well as by many other species of Araliaceae is, that the seed-embryo appears to be quite dormant or not fully developed. It means, by my sowings anyway, that seed of Oplopanax horridus needs to be stratificated both in warm and in cold. I've tried one month warm (c. 20C) and three months cold (c. 4C), which has not been enough. With that treatment just a minor part of seed has germinated the first spring, most of seed having germinated the second spring after natural warm/cold treatments outdoors.
