 Paul,

 having just soaked dry seed in water to imbibe, or in some cases sulfuric 
 acid to scarify hard-coated seed (many species of fam. Fabaceae, 
 Crataegus spp., Cotoneaster spp. and so on), I cannot say much about
 using dishwater soap to leaching; won't do any harm, though, I suppose.

 Another thing by Oplopanax horridus as well as by many other species
 of Araliaceae is, that the seed-embryo appears to be quite dormant or
 not fully developed. It means, by my sowings anyway, that seed of
 Oplopanax horridus needs to be stratificated both in warm and in cold.
 I've tried one month warm (c. 20C) and three months cold (c. 4C), which
 has not been enough. With that treatment just a minor part of seed has 
 germinated the first spring, most of seed having germinated the second
 spring after natural warm/cold treatments outdoors.
