I seldom post but did want to commend you Caron for your excellent explaination of a very worthy organization;
the Seed Savers Exchange...Since Martha Stewart has showcased them, membership should be on the rise,I have been a member for 8-9yrs now and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking the adventure of trying something "new",and in the process preserve and protect some of the finest veggie seed to be found..I think of them as "private stock",as many of these were maintained for generations primarily due to their outstanding qualities and flavor(above all else)..
With the changing of how seed is offered to the general public there is more incentive than ever to grow herbs,flowers and vegetables that you may save from your own garden stock..They (the seed companies)are already hard at work utilizing gene alteration to forever change seed grown by even home gardeners...I so prize some of my seed that I provided produce, from these same seed,to area upscale restaurants for over 7yrs..it was a great experience for me and the chefs..I know I will grow them for my own use for as long as I can garden.
To keep this on subject could someone instruct,on the (hopeful)viability
of seed produced by a lone Datisca cannabina?

The Seed Savers Exchange is a seed bank (of sorts) where open pollinated seeds are
grown out, maintained and redistributed to other gardeners for a very small fee. In 1997 there were over 11,000 unique varieties listed in the yearbook by over 1,000 listed members from all over the world. Here's how it works-you pay your dues (somewhere around $25 per year) and if you have any open-pollinated veggie seed you send in that listing once a year in the fall. Your name and address is listed along with the seed offered. You are now a "listed" member.>>>>>>>>
