Re: Rudbeckia maxima

We are seed growers as well as sellers of seed & have had this species
"in production" for many years. Dale is quite right that the percentages
of seed with properly developed embryos is quite low in this
particularly Rudbeckia; the average being 50-60%. It does not seem to
matter whether conditions are perfect for proper seed development
(pollination, weather, moisture etc); we have little variation from year
to year in those percentage averages. While we clean seed on a rather
large scale, and are able to "find" the seeds that do, in fact contain
embryo's- the home gardener can, by simple visual inspection do the same
thing: eyeball the seeds first & choose the "chubbiest" ones, or simply
press on the seed with forefinger or thumb to ensure it is not "flat."
However, once having done that- germinate the seed at simple warm. They
should sprout within 10 days- usually within 5.
Cheers.
