Chris,
as far as the willow goes, I have found that cutting them and just sticking them in the ground works the best. 6 to 8 inch cuttings bottom leaves removed and in the ground they go. I had tried to root them in perlite, sand, and in pots, the success rate was never as good as right into the ground. Best results came from spots in the garden with indirect sun and moist ground. In and around hostas seems to take almost every time. I found that late spring, early summer or when ever I had to cut one back. The following year I move them to where I want. I have been playing with willow and trying to get enough for basket weaving and willow structures.
