I like mulch and find that it improves the clay soil on our place. I placed
heavy landscape cloth on an area then about 4 inches of hardwood mulch.
Tulips poked their heads through all of this with out any problem. I've
been using newspaper about 8 sheets thick then the hardwood and haven't
noticed any perennial or bulb with a problem. I'm sure there are
exceptions, but my ground needs the mulch so any plant that can't handle it
can't live here.
