We sold numerous plants of this this year. I even got some as bare
root. They grow from a tuber similar to a dahlia. In fact, the tuber
can get quite large. I, too, have never seen the seed available, even
commercially. But I was told by a wholesale grower that the tuber can
be divided as a dahlia can. They are VERY late emerging in the spring,
and will not take a freeze. They LOVE heat. Be careful in your
watering. We rotted 50 tubers by keeping them too wet and cold before
they broke dormancy.
One wholesale grower I talked to said they only get about a 50% survival
rate on their tubers that they hold over. Albeit that these particular
tubers were quite small. The bareroot I got in were approximatly 6
inches across.
Do hope that this helps.
