RE: Stevia

HI All,

Here is an update on the stevia. I stuckt 18 tip cuttings from the plant
about 2 weeks ago and 14 of them look good. No roots yet, though, and no
new growth. Yesterday I seeded a small flat with the tiny seeds. I didn't
bury them, just sowed them on top and watered them in with some weak
compost tea. I think I may have harvested some of the seeds too early. Some
were brown, some were a little greenish. It's still warm here, so the flats
are in the greenhouse. I have seed left, so if these don't germinate, I'll
try more with bottom heat.

I think the plants may be hardy in my area, Z8/9 (South Central Texas), but
I dug them up anyway because I didn't like their placement. Also, they were
very sprawly (?), because they didn't get harvested enough or because they
were behind a big Blue Porterweed. The tops have died off since I potted
them, but there is new growth at the base of the plant. I'll keep them in
my greenhouse over the winter and plant them out in the Spring. I'll
probably leave one out next winter just to see how it does.
