* Monsanto Co. announced last week that it does not plan to market
genetically engineered seed with the so-called terminator gene.
Chairman and CEO Robert Shapiro said the company won't develop
the terminator technology, which prevents genetically modified plants
from producing fertile seed. Plants produced with the terminator gene
would require growers to buy more seed rather than using seed from
the previous year's crop. Farmers were also concerned that the pollen
from these crops could render plants sterile in neighboring fields.
