One of the best ways to have success with corn is to grow alot of it! I
mean lots! Two rows of two stalks each (does that equal four plants?) is
nowhere near enough. You need at least 20 or 30 plants to get enough
kernals pollinated to get an ear worth eating. In terms of worms, I find
that they are just something to put up with. Try to pick the corn before
the worms get too much of it. and the purple growth -- I bet this is corn
smut which is a delicacy in hispanic cooking. Just goes to show you that
one person's trash.... well, you probably know that saying. I know there
are lots of websites out there devoted to growing a single fruit or
vegetable, I suggest you do a web search for growing corn so you can plan
for next year.
Good luck!
