Dawn:
Your Black Hollyhocks will come 99% true from seed (only because I
have a hard time with absolutes).... We have grown Alcea rosea nigra
in close proximity to Alcea rugosa (the yellow fig-leaved species) and
also ordinary single hollyhocks in a wide variety of colour. The
"nigra" has always maintained its colour integrity.
Gaura lindheimeri: Ours here in Zone 4 are still blooming gloriously
(as they have of course since July)...A wonderful, underutilized
native species...
If you observe each stem very carefully, you will see a series of
seeds lining the stems and branching stems. Some will be green, some
beige and some brownish...Take the beige to brownish ones only and
keep collecting the green ones as they turn colour. They will continue
to ripen...Gaura is an easy, warm germinator. You can either sow
indoors over winter, or allow them to self-sow where they are, which
they do rather efficiently.
