Nan,
My own experience with fig says that after the cutting come out with two or
four leaves you can dig 10 inches around the cutting taking out the lump of the
soil where the rooting is. Despite the success is quite sure, if you have
problems try just putting a batch of new cuttings in a plastic pot with water
(you can change the water once a week to avoid roting problems). After 45-60
days you'll have all the viable cutttings full of roots looking like a white
wig.
