The King and Queen of open shade, Hosta and ASTILBE...well there are others
to work with too, for shade.
Speaking of dividing up or moving lily of-the-valley, I have a 15x8 foot
section to dig up and pot up this spring. Must be 15,000 pips in there. This
will not be at the top of my favorite tasks to do this spring. They do well
until they get overly crowded-then less flowers in spring. Now is not a bad
time to move them, they will just look a little funny the first year. Keep
them watered and give them some "food" and next year they should bloom well.
Besides the Convallaria, LAMIUM spreads very well in open shade too. Many
with colorful flower displays and attractive foliage too. Somewhat drought
tolerant (much better than the ASTILBE).
Wild Ginger is another spreader I like much.
