One of the good things about native plants is that they are part of the
food chain for native animals. I grow hostas, narcissus, daylilies,
astilbe, and many other non-natives, but when I can, I do try to plant
natives also. As for dull and boring, I think it's pretty exciting when
you see an American Goldfinch in its summer plumage investigating a purple
coneflower or Rudbeckia, or a hummingbird on the monarda. Remember, too,
that our very own native plants were greeted with much excitement by the
European botanists when they first saw them--THEY didn't think they were
dull and boring. If we tried to look at these plants through their eyes,
we might find them quite wonderful--and indeed they are.
