Hi Margaret and Terry: Good to "see" both of you again. Margaret, thanks for
the info. I haven't gardened, to speak of, in 3 years.....and I've forgotten
half of what I knew! No, no test! :) Hope all is well in your neck of the
woods. Once again, we're heading into a drought here - worse, so far, than
1999 and LOTS of large trees died in that one. Have to have 2 taken down in
my yard this summer before they blow down! Fine time for me to plant a water
hog hydrangea and babysit a birch! Of course, shade gardening here is all I
can do. There is so MUCH shade that I can't even grow a houseplant!

Hiya, Rosemary.  Good to see your name on the "from" list again.  Borers
attach birches at the top, unfortunately. There's a certain window of time
in which they're susceptible to systemic insecticides. Were I you, I'd
learn what that window is.  Their exit holes look like a perfect capital
"D" from a typewriter.  Dirr says kalmia does like acid soil. He also says
some versions (my word) of Birch (Betula) and witchhazel (Hamamelis) are
variously tolerant of some alkalinity. Will there be a test on this?  <VBG>
