question on Carolina Allspice

Has anyone successfully grown this shrub from seed? Our mature bush
produced 3 big seed pods in fall, and when I opened them just now they
contained beautiful large brown seeds. I know that this plant is variable,
but is it worth trying to grow some good seedlings? Should I start them
indoors or can they just be sowed outdoors right now? How deep?
