Bobbi, don't get your hopes up. If the seed receptacles are brown and
withered, germination is quite low. Dirr said he planted 75 seeds, one
germinated. He got 90% germination when he collected seeds in August (when
seed coats were changing from green to brown)...Check his "Manual of Woody
Landscape Plants" if you have access at a library.
Thanks so much. However, this brings up another question. The seeds spent this
long cold winter on the shrub, and I just now harvested them. I presume this
means they have been sufficiently stratified already and don't need to spend
three months in the fridge? Or do they need to be in soil during
stratification?
