In southern Indiana we have been having the same yo-yo weather as
everyone else on the East Coast. This winter has been mild and while
everything awoke way too early, there late (normal) freezes have not bee as
sever as in the past. We did get down to 8 degrees one night a couple of
weeks ago. Lots of sunshine though, and the plants are responding
accordingly.
Adonis is always one of the first up each year and this year is no
exception. Couple of nice clumps now with feathery yellow petals centered
with green boss. Hepatica nobilis, H. americana and H. acutiloba are doing
well but not lasting long in bloom. False Rue Anemone is lovely scattered
among the Primula veris. Above the two the dwarf white blooming Redbud is
coming into bloom. Primula kisoana is running around in the bed between the
Pulsatilla with cup petal forms in deep royal purples. The Pulsatilla
vulgaris in red, lavender-blue and white made great companions. Primula
vulgaris in several colors are just beginning to open along with Primula
sieboldii. P. sieboldii I have scattered throughout the garden both on
lower and upper levels I am so fond of this one. Never seem to get enough
of this one. The little P. juliana Early Girl is new to this year and I
have not made up my mind about this one. The bronze red leaves are nice,
but the blooms a bit blah in a pale yellow-white with darker yellow center.
The Anemone and Anemonellas are great this year.
Pulmonaria Johnson's Blue is a sheet of bright deep blue over felt
green on the hillside. The Woods' Poppies are beginning to pop with bright
yellow further bringing out the blue. P. Sissinghurst White helps to tone
it down a bit. Ms Moon is good old Ms. Moon and performing as always. Some
of the newer selections and hybrids in smaller sizes are only getting
started as this is their first full year in the garden.
