Hi Forrest!
I am not a professional, first of all. I do scatter a balanced fertilizer
around my plants in spring--those that are in the ground.
With potted plants(and here my only experience is with hostas), I don't mix
the fertilizer with the soil. Rather, I use Osmocote-and about one tablespoon
per one gallon container. I sprinkle this on the surface.
With hostas, whether planted in the ground or in containers, I would be very
careful in using phoshate. It should not touch the roots. But it should be
close enough to the roots for the plant to absorb it.
Your question is an excellent one! I look forward to see what other growers do
in respect of mixing fertilizers with their soil in container growing.

P.S. I DO add massive amounts of Green Sand to my soil composition.
