I don't know if your clay is like our clay in Georgia.
Our clay can be so compacted that it needs something coarse to allow air
to get to the roots of plants. Plants can literally drown if much of our
soil is not amended correctly. Down south we have an abundance of pines
so what many use is a composted pine bark. Much of this is sold in bags
under the name 'natures helper' but I try to get something a little
coarser if tilling into the soil. Any fertilizer will do but I usually
try to use a slow release nitrogen. Osmocote is fine but expensive when
you have a collection of over 250 hostas. At times I have used a slow
release lawn fertilizer on my beds with no burning. Never used green
sand!
