  Gary:

I can't help but laugh as I read this suggestion as I have a great
childhood memory of my father doing this. He stuck a hose down the hole
as far as he could, left it on all day to "flood that rascal out". He
came back later to find the hole collapsed. He pulled on the hose to no
avail. He then tied it to the bumper of our old Ford Fairlane and still
no luck. He had to cut off the hose and we had the shortest hose in the
neighborhood. I crack up laughing everytime I think of this story (I
seem to recal this is where I learned my first swear words also).
