I was wondering if anyone could describe the difference (if any) between
the following plants.
Polygonum cuspidatum 'Crimson Beauty
Polygonum cuspidatum 'Spectabile'
Polygonum cuspidatum 'Compactum'
Polygonum sachalinense
Polygonum virginiana 'Painters Pallete'

Mark,
Sorry for the blank mail- wanted to answer later and sent before I had time to
put my 2 cents in.
"Polygonum cuspidatum (syn P.japonica, Fallopia japonicum, Reynoutria
Japonica). Japanese knotweed, is a creeping, clumping form which can also get
out of hand. Plants grow about 6' tall and bear creamy white flowers. Avoid
the species : 'Compactum" is only about 18" tall and bears pink flowers in the
summer. 'Spectables ('Varigata') is big but at least it has unique leaves
splashed with white, yellow and pink. I didn't say it was pretty, only unique.
It will also colonize your neighbor's place."
The above paragraph was copied from Herbaceous Perennial Plants by Allen
Armitage and those are his opinions.Armitage also suggests that unless you
have enough room Polygonum sachalinense which requires an abundance of space
might need to be avoided.
I like this book (ISBN 0-87563-723-X) not only because of the factual
information but Allen gives opinions, and some cultural advise as well. Great
book to own and fun to read.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
