I think you would be able to grow some of the recently introduced variegated
asarums. Also, try Asarum europaeum. Another for color--Lysimachia punctata
'Alexander'. On the fringes plant L. nummumlaria 'Aurea'. And how about masses
of Hosta 'Decorata.' It spreads. Finally, Vinca minor 'Ralph Shugert' is a
variegated vinca that would do well in the situation you describe.
I would mix some. For height Phlox divaricata and of course for a natural
look--the marvelous sanguinarias.
