Hi Sheila,
Once the flowers of spring have gone, we are left with unsightly leaves which
must remain to regenerate the bulbs for next year.
I like a orderly garden, when possible, so the yellow, dying leaves, wore
heavily on me. I began to experiment with cutback dates, and over the years,
discovered I could cut all bulb leaves below ground level, on the last day of
May. I gauge my successful timing to the very large flowers I have each
spring. Of course, the bulbs enjoy the benefits of manure and fertilizers,
along with the plants of summer and fall.
