Re: Landscape Objectives, Clyde Crockett wrote ..T'will shock the plant (and you will likely see no growth on that plant-crown until Autumn of this year).
Re: Propagation Purposes, Gerorge Mannoe wrote ..it is best to wait until the eyes have emerged (so you can see what you are dividing eh?) ..IF? ..that is what you are doing and...
IF? ..you are simply moving a plant from one area to another and not dividing same ..keep the root-ball in tact with soil attached, as much as possible; and this, as soon as you see eyes above ground level. After transplant ..water it very well, to remove all air-pockets from the soil; and if you have it? ..mix in some water-soluable fertilizer say in the 10-60-10 range...
IF? ..the name of your game is to maximize propagation into "Saleables?" and/or landscape-expansions ..opposed to ornamental landscape uses alone:
1.. Divide clumps, as soon as the eyes are visible, at this time of the year ..in the "bullet stage" preferably i.e. looking at a tightly furled leaf-cluster of each eye, which looks like a pointed object "spear-head" or a "big-bullet" for example.
2.. Divide again in August or thereafter, since at this yearly-season:
a).. buds for next year's plant growth are visible on this years pip-growth (stems & shoots) and behind every leaf-petiole (stem), at crown level, sits another eye/bud.
b).. you can cut-down-to an individual & single bud-cutting successfully, if you so choose, by splitting the leaf-shoots and/or doing individual bud cuttings.
c).. Make sure some roots are attached to the crown/stem/bud-cuttings ..using a clean Xacto/knife and preferably dipping cutting-tool in fungicide powder and/or rooting hormone (which contains same).
NOW HERE'S A REALLY GOOD TIP FOR YOU:
d).. IF? ..you find pieces of the crown left over after you finish your surgery/division; dip them into the rooting hormone/fungicide ..stick these pieces into the ground; they will produce eyes at each cut-edge; and you shall see plants, this year and/or the year after ..if it is done at fall-time. I'm of the opinion, you can put a hosta-crown through a "meat-slicer" ..plant the pieces and you will get plants... it's that simple!
NOW & IF? ..we had some volunteer ground-troups from somewhere? ..we might have 'PEACE ON EARTH'! ..if we can get Mila'seva'_itchy'finger? ..er whoops ..I went off topic ..CNN is jabbering in the background here? Meant to say ..if we had some bacon? ..we might have Bacon N' Eggs! ..if we had some eggs? LOL
Just some thoughts ..hope they helpful; & remaining hosta sincerely yours
