Zantedeschia or calla lily is grown in a pot in zone 4.  Depending on which
species you have
The smaller callas in the colors are grown in pots, bloom and then rest for a
long time in the pot.  They are deciduous, the rest period would extend
beyond good weather, hence the pots.  The large white calla, aethiopica, is
evergreen and comes indoors.  Aethiopica is an everbloomer.  All are South
African swamp plants needing a lot of water.  Aethiopica can live in a
container with the saucer filled with water, it is a great plant.  None want
direct American sun.

I am sure NYC is not safe for calla lilies outdoors in the ground unless you
do not wish to have them the following year.  There are instructions here and
there for digging an storing tubers but leaving dry in a container is much
easier.

If you cannot tell which side is up plant vertically and you will be fine.
