Nancy,

Why not plant them on their side.  That is what i do with begonias,
renunculus (sp) and anything else i'm not sure about.
Ginny in Prince George,BC   zone 2/3  where I'm busy taking cuttings from
my impatiens which were started FAR too early in base,emt.
