In my experience, both can tolerate some modest shade. Bloom will be
reduced accordingly. I've had marginally better luck with Japanese iris in
part shade.
Here, by the time the Japanese bloom, it is very hot and the flowers can
melt in a day or two. Some afternoon shade helps the problem, as does
consistant and heavy watering.
