These are beautiful plants and I have tried Ligularies twice in my Gulf
Coast, Zone 9 garden and they just can't take the summers. I believe it has
something to do with the humidity combined with the heat - not really sure.

I saw that someone suggested gingers.....Kaempferia's grow beautifully in the
Gulf Coast, Zone 9 some spreading rapidly to form a nice carpet in no time -
the hybrids tend to be a bit slower. I have one Asarum that has been growing
in my shade garden for two growing seasons now and it still has only two
leaves....I'm not sure if he will make it through the month of August.

Cajun - if you are interested in seeing some of the Kaempferia's I will be
glad to send you a picture or two. These are not evergreen....they
completely die back in the winter but what a show for the rest of the year.
Once they emerge in late spring they grow very quickly...really, these plants
can become addicting.
