Ophiopogon Nigrescens grows very very very slowly! But what a beautiful and
unusual plant-tho not for dark places where it wouldn't have much to say.
My plain ol' green leaved, purple flowered Liriope (from the old days when I
didn't plant the tags) do not spread, though the clumps grow just a bit
every year. You'd have to plant them pretty tight to begin with to use them
as a groundcover. My L. spicata 'silver dragon' -a lovely plant-- is
spreading via underground methods; put up about 3 shoots this year.
I have a Carex 'Ice Dance" that is spreading underground as well. This one
is spreading a bit faster than the Silver Dragon.
These are all turtles compared to ajuga reptans (the common green/purple
one).

My pet ajuga is the 'Metallica Crispa' which doesn't spread like the rest
of them do. The green & white one doesn't spread all that much either. How
does ophiopogon do? The dwarf one is so nice. It spreads, but not all that
much, and should be pretty easy to get under control.
