Joe,
Assuming you are focusing in on exactly what ajuga to put in your long
garden, a factor that would be good to consider is how light or dark your
garden is as well as the attractiveness and vigorousness of the individual
species/cultivars.
E.g., a darker spot (still having enough light to bring out good color)
might do better with a lighter ajuga. I have A. reptans "Multicolor" which
grows slower than the Common Bugleweed but is much prettier.
I also have what I will guess to be Burgundy Glow. Wow, the leaves are a
gorgeous deep burgundy with the most amazing coppery brilliance to them.
Good for a brighter garden.
I do have a year-old Catlin's Giant. It is supposed to have "dark
bronze-purple leaves" ("bronze" may be the color I was trying to find above
with "copper"), but so far mine are more like the species, even the Catlin's
with more sun.
I haven't mentioned common bugleweed but I'm sure you know what it looks
like. Mine are pure shiny green where they get less light; the brighter
locations give some burgundy in the leaves (but not even close to B.Glow).
I actually have all these together in waves. You could possibly create more
depth to balance the length of your garden if you're sticking to ajuga;
e.g., the Multicolor mixed around the front with (not much) species reptan
behind it followed by mostly Burgundy Glow but then some Giant in the back.
I'm not suggesting rigid boundaries between the groups, however.
This could work differently with the Multicolor in the darker places and
Burgundy Glow in the brightest places etc....noting that Multicolor has a
rich raspberry red that is brightest in more sun and more pinkish in less
sun....
Anyway, some ideas. These are the only ajugas I have seen.
