Well, Bobbi, I knew I'd saved something about this, but it took a
while to find it. Here's a post made to peony list sometime in 2000
about the change...hope it answers your question.
"All future catalogs will be with the moniker Song Sparrow Nursery.
This is an attempt by the Klehm brothers to differentiate the various
aspects of the Klehm family business. All retail and wholesale
perennial sales will be led through this part of the operation. The
business officer remains in Barrington while the new farm is located
in Avalon, Wisconsin. Before this change, all perennials including
peonies were grown on the Klehm farm in Champaign, Illinois. It had
alot of history, but years of cultivation took its toll on the
vitality of the ground. It was decided the nursery needed to be
relocated on new ground, so the old farm was sold to a developer.
Mail order sales still originated from the old farm until this past
November, now shipments and plants will come from Wisconsin. Another
major factor in the reorganization was Roy Klehm lived 3 hours from
the old farm. This provided a management logistics problem, so the
new farm is now only 45 minutes from his home. Consult your Song
Sparrow catalog for more information on the selections process for
the new farm. By the way, the 2000 catalog marks the first time the
Klehms have a picture for every mail order perennial offering. Some
of the pictures may not be the best due to light exposure, but it is
still a great improvement in their catalog content. Hope this helps."
