Mark,
I am in zone 5 here and have yews in my foundation plantings. Yews are used
abundantly here in SW OH. They seem to be very tolerant of most conditions,
shade, sun, drought and swampy areas. I did not pay attention to your
question, but did look up Yew in Dirr and he pretty much says that they are good in
zone 5. The pendulous baccata 'Repandens is especially known to be hardy. I
have had 'Fastigiata' as well as the English-Japanese varieties and all did well
except my husband tends to turn them into geometric forms with his electric
hedge trimmers. He will never learn!
Anyway, I hope you decide to give your yew a try, I think it will work.
