"Seeds of Woody Plants In North America" by Young & Young concurs
with what Paul has said.  Seed needs a warm stratification period
min. 60 days at 25C (77F ) followed by min. 150 days at 1C (33F).
Book further says that acid scarification for 1 hour encourages
germination (guess it mimics going through a squirrel's tummy or
something).  So, as Paul says, plant now outside and leave them to
winter over.  I think the screen over the area, flat or pots is a
good idea.  I use metal window screen over my pots; keeps out
critters and debris, plus you can cut it with scissors and bend it to
make a top for a flat or whatever you want.
