Re: [SG] Iris Danfordiae

I have grown these on and off for years. For me, they don't last more than
a year or two in the garden. Maybe 3 years at most. No, they don't
increase at all. They are a strange, bright yellow with a tinge of green
to them, which I have never made up my mind if I like or not, and they are
a bit stubby looking. Of the little early iris, I. reticulata does best,
and I like it best although it doesn't last all that well either, maybe
4-5 years at most. They come in an assortment of lovely shades of bluish
or reddish purple.

Then there is the native I. cristata, which blooms a little later but has
beautiful markings on lavender petals, is more graceful than either of the
other two, and should last forever once planted. It is not aggressive but
does slowly increase for me.

You didn't ask for all this, but thought I would share my thoughts on the
early irises in general.

I plant the first two rather shallowly, no more than 2 or 3" deep.
Cristata just needs to have its roots covered.
