Hello Everyone,
Hey, how are you guys and gals doing? I'm Rizanino
Reyes and I'm a big fan of gardening in the shade. There's nothing more
relaxing and refreshing than working away from the hot blistering sun of
summer and strolling through a shade garden. So peaceful, quiet, gives me time
to think and reflect on life.
Unfortunately, my shade garden is in a deck here in my family's apartment in
Shoreline, WA. Not much room to stroll around and enjoy everything, but I do
what i can as most of my favorite plants are shade lovers. I'm a hosta
collector, a lily grower and hybridizer, and I take part in the third largest
flower show in the nation, The Northwest Flower and Garden Show, held in
Seattle, just a few minutes south of us! I've forced hostas for the show and
intend on expanding if I obtain more plants to exhibit. I'm not really your
typical plant collector, I'll tell you that! I'm not very good at socializing
with adults and I tend to take my horticultural work personally.
Gardening is a very big part of my life starting since I was very little
back when I lived in the Philippines. I'm 16 years old now and going to be a
sophmore in high school. I'm trying desperately to get practice and get my
license to drive!!
And yes I'm Filipino and proud to be one!! I try and do everything that will
someday bring honor to my homeland. I hope to someday have nursery operations
here and in the Philippines. And one thing that may surprise you. We have
hostas in the Philippines!!! At least from what I thought. I remember huge
green glossy leaves in the shade with tall spikes of trumpet white flowers
with a scent I admired so much. The neighborhood boys always made fun of me
for smelling the blooms everytime we pass by the clump in my families yard.
Now that I think about it. Maybe it was Hosta Plantaginea that found its way
from China!!
So, i grow most of my shade plants in pots and they do ok. Most of the
plants in my deck are currently being grown for show!!. So there isn't much of
a garden, but I do my homework and learn from experience!! I'd love to hear
from anyone out there, especially any Filipinos or Washington residents. So,
e-mail or somethin'
oh, by the way call me Riz ok!! That's what friends call me and I hope to make
friendships in this listerve as we exchange info and share experiences both
good and bad!!
Enjoy the rest of the gardening season. I'd be happy to answer questions or
contribute suggestions. Hey, I maybe 16, but my passion for plants sets me
apart from everyone else!!!
Hope I know some of you!!
I apologize for such a long intro.
