Well, Dirr lists Clematis, in general, as being hardy from zones 3 to 8 or
9, so it may be that you are trying some that are not particularly adapted
to your zone and climate. Try Clematis armandii, which is really not hardy
where I am and should do for you. Here's the URL to a page about it with
photo.

There are probably others suited to your climate, but I can't name any off
the top of my head as I'm not much of a Clematis authority, only growing a
handful. Anybody else in the South got any ideas for Cajun Joe?
Oh...check out Dave Skinner's Le Jardin Ombragé site -
http://www.nettally.com/skinnerd/ombrage.html
He's in zone 9 Florida and lists plants he grows as well as those he can't
and he may have some Clematis. I don't know as I haven't searched for
them...but anybody gardening in the far south ought to visit his pages as
he has lots of info and photos on them for far south gardens.
There is an American Clematis Society - formerly the Southern California
Clematis Society - web site has little info., but how to join and buy some
books - however might be useful to you as S CA is also a land of warm
temps. URL to their page is: http://clematis.org/
There's also an International Clematis Society with a web site with much
more useful information on growing Clematis in general, plus pix...URL is:
http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/clematis/index.htm, but it's not southern
temp. oriented.
I really think it's a matter of doing some research to find species and
cultivars adapted to warm climates. IMHO, any plant adapted to zones 4 and
colder often has problems living in the far south of this country - even in
the Mid Atlantic states, and to find those that do take to hot, humid
nights takes some searching and some experimenting and some losses....
