Hay Kris,
The species you are thinking of is C. texensis, or Scarlet Clematis.
Small cherry red bells, although color can vary from selection to selection
fairly readily. Kind of hare to find this one in the catalogs. I
occasionally see seeds on some of the lists every once in a while. Takes a
while, but worth the effort. Incidentally, this one is hardy up into this
area.
