I think firethorn is another name for pyracantha. For us, this is not
reliably evergreen in winter, and it seems very susceptible to mildew and
fungus during our hot, muggy summers. More often than not, the berries
start to color and then just turn black and rot. Ours may be in too much
shade, or maybe we have the wrong cultivar. In places like California,
they can grow less hardy cultivars that are truly beautiful all year long.
