claire,
we've collected from river banks in almost pure sand
(in anticipation of flooding)
and from the tops of rock outcrops, where roots were nice and flat, but long
and from cliffsides, in cracks in the rock (seedlings)
the sand ones do better
the saddest was a marta (train line), where there were thigh sized kalmias,
(i have big thighs) maybe 15' tall, some of the biggest i've seen here
the developers wouldnt give us permisson to collect, cuz they wanted to
"save" the habitat
they roached it
to the ground
couldn't even make furniture when they finished.
bottom line is this
they "pop' back on old wood real well, so they can be cut back, AND COLLECTED
AS "STUMPS" IF NEED BE
then regrown in prepared beds.
we do these things best in early spring, before the buds pop
hope this helps
