Re: [PRIMROSES] huge Shadegardens -- Petasites?

Cindy,

Do you mind if I answer your question which was addressed to Bill? Petasites
can be invasive. Beth Chatto says you should not grow it unless you are
willing to use RoundUp. I have the large Petasites (Petasites japonicus var.
giganteus) in a corner of the garden, with "normal" watering, and after about
6 years it has maybe a 6-8 foot spread. I have found that it is fairly easy
to control with simply pulling it out when it heads where it doesn't belong,
but I'm sure having it planted in a loose, sandy soil helps. If put in its
element where it has wet feet, my bet is that it would be much more
aggressive. I have seen people growing this in large containers placed in
wading pools. This helps somewhat in keeping the slugs away from it, too. By
the way, the Petasites japonicus Variegatus gets "only" 3 feet tall, and seems
to be a tad slower to spread than the species.

Happy holidays!
