Thanks for your kind welcome to this new member of Primroses. I have
only been gardening for 2 years, and have so much to learn! My garden is my
22' wide townhouse lot. The initial garden was 24' deep, with a brick patio
and path and got filled pretty fast! You know how it can be, with so many
plants that just HAVE to be included. Since hostas are my major weakness, I
had to find more shade space. Well, there goes the front lawn! It was
little, but it had a birch tree for shade, and filled up nicely (and quickly).
I've now got 30 varieties of hostas, some of which are pretty small, but as
you say, after a few years they should make good sized clumps. My favorites
are Whirlwind, White Christmas, and Tokudama Flavocirinalis. As you can see,
I too love the variegateds. I have never grown hostas from seed, but look
forward to doing it someday. I am in awe of those of you with hundreds of
varieties.
I live in the capitol region of NY state, just north of Albany. We are
zone4/5, and it's a loooong winter here. The Upstate NY Hosta Society
started here in 1996, and it has been a great way to meet other hosta lovers
and learn more about the plants. I also look forward to taking part in this
group and learning from you all.
By the way, if you are making a list of people who are eager to receive
catalogs, please count me in!
            Clare Mannino

Hi, folks

I'm John Baron from Porter, TX. Porter is about half an hour northeast
of Houston, in the Piney Woods. We ( I take care of my parents) have a
five acre homestead here where we grow most of our own produce. Extra
produce as well as cuts of everlasting flowers are sold to support my
daylily habit. Among my favorite ornamentals plants are daylilies,
dahlias, hippeastrums, camellias, and gingers.

I am 30ish; I graduated from Texas A&M in 1995 with a bachelor's degree
in Horticulture. In 1997, I completed my MA in Mathematics at Sam
Houston State University, as well as my teacher certification in that
field. Currently, I teach sixth grade math in a neighboring school
district. I look forward to participating in this new gardening forum.

Welcome John! I hope you will wade right in and share your experiences with
shade tolerant plants.
