Primula rosea Grandiflora-Found in the W. Himalayas. A very beautiful
primula with a
crimson rose flower that rises before the leaves appear. The spike is
strong and grows
about 6-8" tall. A customer came to the nursery and said they were in
his garden in
Juneau, and bloomed in the snow. This is a primula that can be grown in
full sun or
semi shade, as long as the soil remains moist. Self seeds. Zone not
listed. 4" $2.49
Primula veris-The old fashioned cowslip found wild in Europe, all the
way to Siberia.
Grows from sea level to 7,000 feet. Leaves grow to 6-8", giving rise to
a strong stalk, 5-
10" tall, holding pure yellow one-sided umbels of flowers. Fragrant.
Self seeds. Grows
in drier situations than many other primula. Naturally found in sunny
meadows and
slopes. Very easy to grow. Zone 5. 2Qt. $3.49
Primula viallii- My favorite (at this moment), from China. Natually
found in high
elevations, in moist meadows, coniferous forests and dry fields. This
variability throws
the botanists for a loop. Leaves 10-15" long, having a flower stalk
that rises from 10-30"
in height. The flowers are arranged tightly in a spike at the top, each
being tubular. The
flower color is gradient from lavender at the bottom of the spike to red
at the tip.
Similar appearance to a 'Red Hot Poker'. In the garden it needs
semi-shade and moisture.
Offsets are freely produced. Will not thrive in hot summers. Zone
6-7. Gallon $5.95
Primula vulgaris 'Granny Graham'- A very beautiful double that everyone
assumes at first
glance to be an African Violet. Rich, velvety purple flowers with a
glimmer of silver
edging. Our stock is ever increasing due to its ease of producing
offsets. A prolific
bloomer. Doubles seed typically comes true to form 30-50% of the time,
for those of
you who are thinking 'what if'. Zone 5-6. 4" $3.95
Primula vulgaris 'Ken Dearman'- Another double, named after Ken who has
done
mahvahlous things with primulas. This one has gorgeous flowers of a
bicolored cream
and apricot. A very floriferous selection. One large commercial grower
came to the
nursery and wanted to buy them all to put them into full production. I
declined. I like
the idea of having something someone else doesn't. (Don't we all?) Zone
5-6. 4" $3.95
Primula vulgaris 'Rosetta Red'- Another beautiful double. Brilliant
scarlet red blooms
fill the center of this rosette. Long blooming. Zone 5-6. 4" $3.95
Primula vulgaris 'Roy Cope'- Another double that ranks as my favorite.
Large flowered,
of a clear, bright red. No hint of orange, just pure color. This has
had the longest lasting
flowers of any of the doubles. The individual flowers have lasted
several weeks with no
thinning of the edges. Zone 5-6. 4" $3.99
Primula vulgaris 'Tie Dye'-A new introduction that hasn't been released
yet from a tissue
culture lab. This will be available by early summer. The flowers are
many colored with
a light eye. Can't call it a bi-color, as the colors are more numerous
than two. I anxiously
await it. A full description will follow when I've seen it in person.
N/A (yet)
We tend to grow the primula that are easy to keep. Because of the
numbers of varieties
that we grow, nothing can be too picky. Everything has to be easy to
grow, or it would
expire. We don't do anything special to them, but water and fertilize
(which many retail
nurseries just can't seem to comprehend to need for....). For this
reason, we are confident
that plants you recieve will grow well for you, if you grow a successful
garden to begin
with.
Shipping:
15% or $4 min.
Gallon size plants will be knocked out and shipped bare root with a
plastic enclosure
and P9 gel crystals to hold moisture to the root zone (if practical).
Canadian orders.....sorry.
