17 or 18 years ago, I took a class, and have retained just a teensy weensy bit
of the information. What I do remember is being told that even adding an inch
of soil over tree roots can be fatal. It is a slow, agonizing death for the
trees, sometimes taking up to 20 years for that last breath of air. I don't
recall anyone specifying any particular trees, but I have seen the effects on
Douglas firs, big-leaf maples and Ponderosa pines, at least. On occasion
(more as time and money permits rather than as needed), I will add a thin
layer of mulch to the soil. I find that I have to water twice as often and
twice as long under the trees, because of the tough water competition.
Valerie, I might suggest you ask for some more hoses for a New Year's present.
Regarding the poor uses of Primula in the landscape, how about some ideas of
how to make better use of them?
