Dear Valerie,
I would recommend first that you enrich the soil with LOTS of compost. I
wouldn't worry about "smothering" the tree roots--no one clears off the dead
leaves in the forest, do they? Soil micro- and macro-organisms will work the
organic material into the soil slowly turning your hardpan clay into excellent
garden soil. Don't get discouraged--for this process takes a number of years,
but the effort is well worth it. You might also consider getting enough hose
to reach this area; water is most important for a shade garden. You don't
need a bog, but you can't let stuff dry out either.
Good Luck
Jim
