Re: [SG] Peony root chewing insect S.O.S. - Thank You!

My thanks to all of you who have responded to my plea for help here!

Paul, he says he's actually seen and removed the "bug" from the roots
because I asked him that, thinking it might really be one of the diseases
Peonies are subject to. Says a friend of his (Iris grower) saw them and
said they were Iris Borers... I was very interested in your comment that
they like Belamcanda since it is of the same family as Iris...but not a
iris...means they do eat other things.

Claire, your comment that they have been known to infest Columbine is also
of great interest, particularly since these are Ranunculaceae, not
Iridaceae and Peonies are also Ranunculaceae! Ah Ha! Appears we could be
building up a bit of knowledge here about an insect that all the web pages
I found on it said *only* ate Iris!!!

Margaret, your point about Black Vine Weevil is also good...I need to find
a photo of that one and see if my reader recognizes it. If they prey on
the leaves, there is a chance they go after the roots, too.

George, I just tried a search for HEPIALIUS LUPULINUS and came up blank.
Is this the right spelling? Is this known to feed on Peonies or plants in
general?

Madelin, thanks for the lead - I will do just that!
