Hello,
I got to thinking this week about my garden and wondered just how may others
think of, or visit, their garden to see what is in bloom, or color, from November
through March. I realize this is a diverse group and many locations are covered.
Some are much more able to have a garden in bloom during winter than others.
However, I suppose my real interest is those zone 6 or colder on the charts.
Personally, I can not imagine a day without my garden to take a walk to and
through, not matter the weather. If it rains you take an umbrella, if it snows you
bundle up a bit more. The garden, to me, it that wonderful elixir promised by all
snakeoil salesmen at the turn of the century... except that this one works. Good
for the body, good for the mind and the soul in just one short walk.
When I take my walk today I will see a Euphoria turning from jade green to
dusky red at the tips. The conifers have taken on their winter colors. One is my
favorite of all. A dwarf gold oriental spruce in deepest green and bright gold.
Heather (or is it heath) are setting buds and will soon be open. Hellebore
foetidus has sent up its blooms stalks and has buds above the black-green base
foliage. The foliage of Galax is its wonder shade of claret-red when the winter
sun shines on the leaves.
How many of you will take a walk to your garden today and what will you see
when you get there?
