Re: Hebe; Schenk

I know very little about hebe, but I'll share it anyway. Hebe is the "new"
name for the shrubby veronicas. In CA there are people who are bananas
about them and collect them, and nurseries that specialize in them,
particularly in the Bay Area, which has a mild maritime climate, never
very hot OR cold. The leaves or leaflets are opposite which gives them a
rather stiff, "perfect" appearance, and they are dark green and leathery.
The fls are small and tend to be shades of white or lavender, depending on
the CV. They are evergreen, and are native to New Zealand. I've never seen
them growing ANYWHERE except the Bay Area, but that doesn't mean others
can't have success with them too. I'd love to hear from any Midwesterners
who have been able to keep them happy, but doubt that I will.

Arnhild: George Schenk lives in the Seattle area (or used to), and has
spent much time in Australia and New Zealand as well. He is a noted rock
gardener. I have his book on that subject, and his later book on shade
gardening, which is a classic. He is a real plantsman and though I don't
know the book on moss gardening, I'm sure it can be relied upon.
