I've got Schenk's book, too and found it most interesting, but as you
say, not as useful for basic ID as I'd hoped. Am a moss fan and have
been moving it around for years - with only fair success, due, I now
know, to the need to relocate moss into exactly the type of
environment it came from. I don't know of other print publications
(surely must be out there somewhere), but have found some web sites
with images of various mosses. Most are quite botany oriented, but
some of the images may prove helpful...here's my list:
Centex Naturalist (Selected Topics of Natural History for Bell County
Texas) has a page of moss photos - some identified - that may be
interesting. URL is: http://www.vvm.com/~jevans/lmmoss.html
Department of Plant Biology of Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale has a page, Phylum Bryophyta, The Mosses with several
images, some of which might be useful - many are close ups of
sporophytes and not really good for visual ID - tho' interesting.

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Kochi University has a
page of Japanese moss images...nice if you're in Japan:-), but also
interesting if you like moss.

Gopher directory at wiscinfo.wisc.edu has some images of sphagnum
moss:

ta/Sphagnum
They have another directory with some other moss images, too:

ta/Views_with_sporophytes
Mosses and Liverworts in Wales also has images:

I've also found one online nursery dealing in moss, Mostly Moss -
http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~lrandol/
In addition to mostly offering a book about moss, she has one page
with an image of several kinds, identified and purchasable...could be
of use to you. http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~lrandol/prices.html
