dividing ferns

Does anyone have any thoughts as to the safety of dividing Braun's holly
ferns (Polystichum braunii), which are similar to Christmas ferns? I've been
dividing my Japanese painted ferns with impunity, but they grow fast and
fall apart when I lift them, virtually beseeching me to make divisions. I am
reluctant to make a mistake with the holly ferns since they are not easy to
find. (If they were, I'd probably not bother with cutting them up.) I really
love how the crosiers look in the spring, and am counting the days until
they (and everything else) springs back to life.
