Hello Deborah,
If the fern is dormant when your receive it, it can be planted any time you
can get it worked into the soil. You do not have to wait until May. In fact, it
and other relatively early emerging plants, do best planted in the fall or late
winter. Let them wake up in their new bed after being settled in and have good
contact with the soil. Not to toot my own horn, but all my plants are in open cold
frames riding with the local weather. I do not force plants in a greenhouse.
Therefore there is no adjusting period, or tender foliage to be worried about.
